One of the top tourist destinations in Costa Rica is the Nicoya peninsula in the Guanacaste province. The area is known for its world class beaches, which attract surfers from around the world. Eco-tourism is also a growing attraction because the interior of the peninsula is still undeveloped and, in places, relatively primitive. Outsiders who visit the Guanacaste region for either of these reasons spend a week or two, maybe a month visiting the area, and don't necessarily care about the amenities available for full time residents. As an emigre, the amenities available are a major factor in deciding whether or not the Nicoya Peninsula is right for you.

The cities on the Nicoya Peninsula provide all the services that anyone would require to live, or retire, very comfortably in the region. Depending on where you ultimately settle, living on the Nicoya Peninsula is similar to living on the Plains states or Mountain states in America. You can live miles away from big cities or live close to a city, while still living in isolation. There are many cities on the peninsula that offer modern facilities, that any American city would be proud of having. Modern medical facilities are available in Liberia, the Capital, and Nicoya in the middle of the peninsula. Liberia also has an international airport, though many visitors and residents travel by ferry across the Gulf of Nicoya and fly out of San Jose. Either way, you are likely to be closer to an airport than someone who lives in most parts of the Rocky Mountain or Plains states.

Grocery stores, hardware stores, clothing stores, and other specialty stores are located in major cities, the same as they are in most other countries around the world. You may be living in paradise, but the necessities of life are only a short vehicle ride away. The roads may not be paved in many areas of the Nicoya peninsula, but that only adds to the rural atmosphere that many people are looking for when they move to Costa Rica. If you are looking for local produce, traditional handicrafts, or homemade specialties, then you will find everything you are looking for on the peninsula, probably easier than you would find similar local items in most places in the States.

All the usual services that you would expect to find in a moderate sized town in America, Europe, or South America are all available on the Nicoya Peninsula. Banks, attorneys, hair salons, and almost every other service you may finds necessary is provided by professionals who live locally. Many professionals are native Costa Ricans, but there are also a large number of expatriates from around the world who have had the idea that you have had-retire or begin another career in paradise. There are very few professional services that aren't represented by someone who wanted to enjoy life on the Nicoya peninsula and may be working part-time, or in a completely different line of work, yet have the expertise to assist you with any problem you may have. Even smaller towns like Cormona and Jicarel have a surprising wide variety of services and shops for their size.

Even though you may decide to live in a more remote part of the Nicoya peninsula or other parts of Guanacaste province, you can still be in touch with the rest of the world through the internet.
